This is the process of transferring written text from one language into another, considering the original message, text style, format, tone and register.
.
Editing
The translation is compared with its original counterpart and it is checked thoroughly to verify its truthfulness and faithfulness. Grammatical, stylistic, terminological corrections, among others, are made so as to ensure that the text fulfils the client’s expectations and needs.
.
Proofreading
This involves a detailed reading and correction of a text translated by a different translator, focusing only on the target text. It is useful for identifying and correcting line spacing, semantics and typographic errors, among others; and perfecting the translation so that it sounds natural and fluent.
.
TEP
The three essential steps in the translation process: translation, editing and proofreading. These are the key stages to assure the translation accuracy, truthfulness, faithfulness and quality, making sure it reads as if it had been written in the target language.
.
Machine translation post-editing
Also known as MTPE. This involves the assessment and editing of a translation generated by a machine translation engine so as to ensure the linguistic accuracy and quality of the text.
.
Subtitling
This implies the adaptation, or translation and adaptation, of dialogues and/or narration for subtitling, bearing in mind timing, character limitation, reading speed, number of lines, etc.
.
SDH and CC
These are subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing that add more information than regular subtitles, such as speaker tags and sound effects.
.
Timing
This is the synchronization of the subtitles with the video’s audio considering various factors, e.g. scene changes.
.
Dubbing
This entails the translation and adaptation of dialogues and/or narration in order to write a dubbing script in the target language, taking into account lip sync, timing, types of shot, etc. so that the audience cannot tell the difference.
.
Voice over
This involves the translation and adaptation of the dialogues and/or narration in order to write a script in a different language. The audience is able to listen to the original audio and its translation at the same time.
.
Audio description
This consists of a detailed description, in audio format, so that blind or visually impaired people can have equal access to visual or audiovisual content. When talking about audiovisual content (e.g. videos and theatre plays), the narrator takes advantage of the natural pauses in speech to describe the key visual elements.
.
Transcription
This is the process of converting speech content in an audio recording into written text in the same language. Either video or audio files can be transcribed.
